Programme Duration

The scholar is expected to complete the program in four years. Under exceptional circumstances, an extension(s) may be granted to the scholar.

Curriculum

  • The doctoral coursework is designed to support scholars in growing as researchers and thinkers. Courses emphasize engagement with research papers, providing a strong foundation in the latest ideas and debates within each field. They are tailored to specific domains, encouraging scholars to explore knowledge, theories, and perspectives while also reflecting on the philosophical foundations that shape research. Along the way, the curriculum builds practical skills—ranging from research methods and analytical tools to pedagogy—that equip scholars for success throughout the program and beyond.
  • Ph.D. in Management (Practice Track) at IIM Raipur has two phases: coursework and thesis research work. The first year is  divided into Terms 1, 2, 3 & 4 and covers the mandatory coursework that will equip the scholars with the necessary research skills.

Coursework

PhD Terms Structure
Term 1

Management Research Term

The term provides a bridge between practice and doctoral-level inquiry, offering research-focused management courses that build on executives’ practical knowledge. This term equips scholars to transition into PhD-level coursework.

Term 2

PhD Core Courses

The term focuses on building foundational research capabilities through PhD core courses in quantitative and qualitative methodologies, along with developing scholars’ academic writing skills.

Terms
3 & 4

PhD Area Core and Elective Courses

The focus in these terms shifts to building deep domain expertise through area-level core and elective courses. These courses, designed within specific fields, give scholars the opportunity to develop both foundational understanding and advanced knowledge, theories, and methods relevant to their chosen area of research. They also provide flexibility to pursue research projects under the guidance of a faculty advisor from the scholar’s area, helping scholars begin shaping their own research direction.

Mode of Coursework Sessions:

All terms will be conducted in a hybrid mode, comprising both offline and online components, as follows:
  • Terms I and II will include two campus immersions. One at the beginning and one at the end of the term. Each immersion will last six days.
  • Terms III and IV will include atleast one campus immersion for seven days in each term.
  • Online classes will primarily be scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays.

Visit to the Campus

  • After the clearing the comprehensive examination, scholars are expected to make regular visits to the campus. A minimum of four days per quarter is mandatory. However, scholars and their Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) may opt to combine the quarterly visits into a single visit per semester, subject to mutual agreement.
