Admission Policy - Ph.D. in Management (Practice Track) 2023

This document summarizes the approach of IIM Raipur in preparing the admission List for its 1st PhD in Management (Practice Track) 2023. IIM Raipur reserves the right to modify any part of this document including the various criteria and cut offs mentioned at any time till the actual admission process for the batch is completed.

IIM Raipur’s PhD in Management (Practice Track) Programme aims to admit individuals with exceptional academic background, strong motivation and discipline, and potential to become excellent researchers at the international level. Since this program is exclusively for individuals with managerial/ entrepreneurial/ professional experience, it is expected that research scholars will work towards developing a methodology, understanding and providing solutions for real life management problems, apart from developing a theoretical framework. Applicants are evaluated on their past academic achievements, motivation and preparation for the programme, letters of recommendation, scores on standard tests, statement of research, and a personal interview with the faculty panel.

AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION

The Institute presently offers PhD in Management (Practice Track) in the following areas of specializations:

ELIGIBILITY

The candidates for the programme must have one of the following qualifications obtained from any of the universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India, or other educational institutions established by an act of parliament or declared to be deemed as a university under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of Education , Government of India, or an equivalent qualification from an institution approved by AICTE

Note:

  1. In addition to the above academic eligibility, candidates should be throughout first class (X, XII, Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree)
  2. Five Percent points relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PWD candidates.

* The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate would be calculated based on the practice as followed by the respective University/Institution. In case of grades / CGPA, the conversion to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure as certified by the respective University/ institution. If any University/institution confirms that there is no scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA, and multiplying the result with 100.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 10 years of managerial/ entrepreneurial/ professional experience (post qualification) as on 31 July 2023. The programme is open to all nationalities.

Only relevant post-qualification work experience in terms of completed months will be considered. Candidate should ensure that the work experience claimed by the candidate is authentic and professionally significant enough to deserve credit. For instance, no consideration is given to any time spent as an intern, either during or after the course of study in a programme, or any periods of apprenticeship such as articleship required as part of certain professional courses, or any unpaid work undertaken in any organization or institution.

The work experience will be verified based on the following documents. These documents should be submitted for work experience in all the organizations for which the candidate has reported on the application form.

  1. Experience Certificate on a letter head of the employer organization carrying a seal of the employer and be duly affirmed by the authorized signatory.

    Offer Letter and Relieving Letter having date of joining and relieving date.
  2. First & Last month pay slip or Bank Statement for the entire experience period.
  3. In case the applicant is a proprietor or partner of a firm, the candidate must provide the following documents:
    1. Certificate of registration for doing a business from the municipal corporation or appropriate authorities such as MSME certificate issued by Govt. of India, Udyog Aadhar Registration Certificate.
    2. Partnership deed of the firm duly signed by all partners.
    3. GST registration certificate
    4. Income Tax Return (ITR) for the relevant period

Note:

Candidates are strictly advised to mention the date of joining and relieving date on the application portal exactly as per the documentary proof available with the candidate.

SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates who fulfil the eligibility criteria as stated above are required to submit any one of the CAT, GRE, GMAT scores along with their application form. Scores of any of these examinations including CAT taken during the last three years (i.e., after 31 July 2020) will be considered valid. Admission to the programme is open to overseas candidates including NRIs and foreign nationals.

Candidates who have already have a one/two/three-year full-time classroom-based PGP/EPGP/PGPWE from IIMs with minimum grade point equivalent to 6.0 out of 10-point scale or equivalent (with no ‘F’s and not more than two ‘D’s in the first year of PGP) are exempted from the test score and can apply directly. It is necessary that candidates applying for exemption from test must attach copies of both side of the grade sheet to ascertain the equivalence between the grading systems of other IIMs, without which, the application for exemption from test will not be considered.

Candidates will also have to submit a ‘Research Statement’ that would help in understanding their clarity of thought for future research. The candidates short-listed on the basis of their academic record, competitive examinations, recommendations and research statement will be called to IIM Raipur for a personal interview for the final selection process.

A candidate receiving admission offer from IIM Raipur and accepting the offer within the stipulated date needs to send along with Offer Acceptance, a non-refundable commitment fee of Rs. 1,00,000 /-  (the date of submission will be mentioned in admission offer letter) which will be adjusted against the amount of first instalment.

If a candidate subsequently wishes to withdraw the offer within the withdrawal date specified in the Offer Letter, Offer Acceptance Amount will be refunded after deducting Rs. 1000/- as processing charges. In the event of withdrawal from the Programme after registration, and if seat consequently falling vacant gets filled by another candidate by the last date of admission, IIM Raipur will return the fees collected with proportionate deductions of fee and hostel rent, where applicable.

HOW TO APPLY?

The completed application for admission to the PhD in Management (Practice Track) Programme shall include the following:

APPLICATION FORM

The online application form for PhD in Management (Practice Track) will be available on IIM Raipur’s website (http://www.iimraipur.ac.in). A candidate is eligible to submit applications to a maximum of two areas of specialization. In such cases, two copies of the application form along with application fee, one for each area, with all supporting documents may be uploaded.

RELEVANT TEST SCORES

Relevant Test Scores include CAT/GMAT/GRE. The test score should be valid on the deadline of the submission of the application form. Test scores of last three years will only be considered (i.e., after 31 July 2020).

APPLICATION FEE

The online application form will be available on our website www.iimraipur.ac.in . Application fee of Rs. 1000/- (Rs. 500 in case of NC-OBC, SC, ST, DAP) for each area applied is to be paid online.

NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE

Candidates have to submit the No-Objection Certificate from their employer at the time of admission.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

Test Score (CAT/GRE/GMAT) cut-off to shortlist for PI

The CAT/GRE/GMAT percentile will be used for shortlisting candidates for PI. The tentative category-wise minimum percentile is as follows:

In case, a prospective candidate does not have the valid scores of either of these three exams or they have not cleared the required cut-off they would also have an option to appear for the RAT (Research Aptitude Test) that would be administered by IIM Raipur on campus, when the candidate comes for the admission process. The admission process would be of around two days. On the 1st day, those candidates who do not have valid exam scores or who don’t have the required cut-offs would appear for the RAT. Those who fail to clear the minimum cut-offs in RAT would not be considered for subsequent PI. On the second day, those who clear RAT would be interviewed by respective panel members.

The respective area will decide the number of candidates to be called for PI on the basis of shortlisted merit list prepared for each category and specialization. However, if the actual number of shortlisted candidates were found to be more than the required number of candidates to be called for PI category-wise, then the overall as well as section wise minimum score would be increased to get the desired number of candidates.

PERSONAL INTERVIEW

Upon being shortlisted as per the score of entrance test the candidate has to appear for a personal interview at IIM Raipur in front of the selection panel. The selection panel will assess the suitability of the candidates for research work based on the portfolio of the candidate. The committee will look into a consistently good academic record, professional accomplishments, research interest etc.

PREPARING THE MERIT LIST

Merit Lists will be prepared specialization wise based on Academic Qualification and Personal Interview.

The following criteria will be applied for preparing the merit lists.

IMPORTANT NOTE

This admission policy applies only to the PhD in Management (Practice Track) selection process for 2023. Please note that IIM Raipur reserves the right to modify the shortlisting, interview criteria and final selection at any point of time till the admission of the 2023-25 batch is completed.

In case of any dispute concerning admissions to PhD in Management (Practice Track) 2023 would be subject to the jurisdiction of the competent courts within the territorial jurisdiction of the city of Raipur only.
